What if hit by lightning

#412322

Post by Super60 »

No drama here just a question of a what if. My mobile and I regularly go to a very high point to shoot some skip. A few times a rather big storm passed over me and I heard lightning. I decided to leave. If I were hit on my antenna a Sirio performer 5000 mag mount would it rip right into the car and kill me? Would I be any safer say with a 104 inch whip that is firmly grounded to the frame? Or neither matter and you’re toast?
Thanks

If you were ever hit you probably wouldn't be around to write or read this post. The chances of a direct strike are about the same as winning the lottery, just saying most likely not but there is that slim chance.

stay off the radio if your in a lightning storm.
if you listen to the static, it builds up and then a lightning bolt happens, immediately after there is a lull in the static, thats when it is safer transmitting,
generally the electricity jumps to the car body but the juice is fickle, so operate at your own risk.
for instance> look at a lightning rod, sometimes they are just a conduit to ground and unharmed,
other times they burn off, vaporized.

I look at the "my radar app" and the "lightning app and set it to 25 miles out. For me it's not worth it as a base station to take any risks. The alarm goes off when lighting is approaching. Just play it safe in the mobile too. You could also pull the radar off the web too.
